ROSIN present at ROSCon 2019

Two talks based on the results of ROSIN will be given at ROSCon 2019 in Macau on November 1st (day 2). At 10:10 listen to "ROS bugs later: Where do we go from here?" --- a reflection based on the analysis of past bugs in the ROS platform. What kinds of bugs do programmers encounter when developing ROS applications? Are those bugs unique to ROS? What can we do to avoid them? At 16:20, Andrzej Wasowski (ITU) will present RxROS: a thin reactive programming layer for ROS that allows to program nodes without callbacks and locks. This eliminates bugs like deadlocks and races by design

ROS-I Summer School at NMU Port Elizabeth, South Africa

After a visit in the region of Cape Town by representatives of the city of Aachen and FH Aachen in context of the partnership between the two cities, it was decided to join forces in the field of mobile robotics. The Nelson Mandela University NMU located in Port Elizabath proclaimed there interest in a ROS-I School as they are already very advanced in automation and robotics, but still on a beginners level with ROS. Quick decisions were made and The NMU hosted the ROS Summer School (Winter there) in July 2019 for one week operated by FH Aachen. The 15 participants had all different levels including undergraduated and Ph.D. students. They learned the basics machanisms in ROS up to the level on how to program an autonomous driving robot.

About This year’s third ROS-I Academy of a total of five events at Fraunhofer IPA. The target is to boost participants from industry with little or no ROS knowledge to a level with broad comprehension of the robotic framework. The theoretical content is consolidated with workshops and is applied on mobile- and industrial robots for the focused areas. Moreover, the last day covers advanced topics which are also rewarding for experienced ROS developer. Agenda More details about the curriculum can be found in the agenda. ROS-Industrial Tech Workshop: ROS2 & DDS

Fraunhofer IPA organized the Spring edition of ROS-Industrial EU Tech Workshop on May 6th and 7th, 2019. ROS 2 supports multiple DDS/RTPS implementations and various factors influence choosing the right vendor: one of the most popular DDS vendors eProsima presented their stacks at the workshop. Additionally, Bosch gave a hands-on feature overview on the status of ROS2 and, as one of the members of the EU-funded Ofera project, presented microROS, which extends ROS2 capabilities for extremely resource constrained devices. Lastly, Fraunhofer IPA demonstrated the porting of the ur_modern_driver to ROS2. More details about the event with blog post and slides can be found here. Next Tech Workshop will be held on October 9 -10, 2019.
